There’s been a rumour that Franklin Windsor has the best coffee on Chapel Street, so naturally, I had to come and see if the rumours were true and also grab something to eat whilst I was there.
Situated right out the front of a tram stop, Franklin Windsor has capitalised on having a grab and go window serving coffee, cakes and something a little more substantial – bircher muesli for those busy people.
The inside looks like an old home with the lounge room in its original form being untouched the rest has now been decked out with booths, art lines the walls (some is very questionable, anime porn?) and a little outdoor sunroom for those warmer Melbourne days.
Saving space by not having a full kitchen, instead, the chef works in small space next to where the coffee is made. Kudos to him, the menu is made up of mostly toast, bagels, burgers & bennys with a few salad options at lunch time.
The staff are really attentive and we were seated and had our coffee within 10 minutes, although the coffee was smooth and rich it isn’t the best coffee on Chapel Street – sorry.
For breakfast, I order the Cuban pulled pork, pickle and bearnaise sauce with an added fried egg. The bagel was massive, filled with overflowing amounts of pulled pork, an abundance of pickles and a runny yolk to rival all other yolk porn… That’s where the excitement stopped, the pork was flavourless, the bagel was burnt around the edges and slathered in so much butter the whole thing just tasted greasy.
What better way to start your day than by clogging your arteries with the Elvis burger. Was Elvis’s heart attack due to drugs or his diet?
A milk bun slathered with peanut butter topped with fried banana and bacon then smothered in maple syrup, It sounds and tasted like something you’d make when you’re high. The peanut butter was overpowering and everything else got a little lost but other than that it’s my inner fat child’s heaven. The blueberries on the side were amazing, tasted like sour candy.
My final thoughts? A wonderful place to grab a coffee on the go or to sit in the courtyard but I’m still questioning why there is anime porn on the wall.
